friendship will be friendship

Friends turn frown into smile,
They meander along with you;
And as you walk an extra mile,
Friends trudge alongside too.

Today make a promise to keep,
One that dares shade and whip;
Sift chaff and molten gold reap,
In the value of a true friendship.

Summer Love

We sailed toward the sun
We tried to touch the mountain tops
You kidded me and said you’d always stay
I held your hand
Trusting you.

We walked fields of green
And sand of gold.
The skies were blue
Love was ours.
You told me you’d be mine forever
Although I knew you couldn’t stay
I stood beside you
Still trusting you.

Discovered Bernard Cornwell

Bernard Cornwell is one of the finest writers of historical fiction in the modern day, and covers a variety of subjects with flair and attention to detail that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.
For those who cherish a good historical fiction novel, picking up just about anything written by British author Bernard Cornwell is truly a pleasure. Cornwell, who has written dozens of books dating back to the early 1980s, typically weaves his wonder with words via tightly-wound series, and has made his name in the historical fiction genre despite also producing some novels that are classified as "thrillers." While the majority of his work centers on early English history, Cornwell also delves into American history in some instances, and has no less a knack for producing excellent prose in such works. For those who have never read Cornwell, a brief overview of the book series he has produced serves as a good introduction and a way to select where to dive in:

The Sharpe Books

The Sharpe Books take place during the Napoleonic War between France and Great Britain, as well as the Peninsular war, during which Britain fought alongside allies Spain and Portugal. There are now over 20 titles in the Sharpe series, and the books have become so popular that actor Sean Bean was chosen to play the main character in a television adaptation of the book. The series spans the global, sprawling war between Great Britain and the French, and Cornwall has since expanded the series even further, with his protagonist Sharpe traveling further abroad.

The Starbuck Chronicles

The Starbuck Chronicles currently consist of four books, including Rebel, Copperhead, Battle Flag and The Bloody Ground. The series follows the exploits of Nathaniel Starbuck, a northerner caught below the Mason Dixon line at the outset of the American Civil War. With few options, Starbuck decides to fight for the South, becoming a so-called "Copperhead." The series is an excellent look at the battles fought between the U.S. states in the 1860s and there is a chance that Cornwell will come back to write more books to add to the existing four.

The Arthur Books

Cornwell’s Arthur books consist of three titles, including The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur. Rather than examining the Arthurian legend in the typical, romanticized manner, Cornwell treats Arthur as what he was – a warlord. Following Arthur in the sixth century as he fought to repel the Saxons from his native Britain, Cornwell captures the rich tradition of England, which as an isolated island nation went through various iterations to become the nation that it is today. The series is rich in history, as all of Cornwell’s novels are.

The Saxon Stories

Continuing along the same lines as the Arthur books in terms of England’s development, this series follows Uhtred, a member of the aristocracy in ninth century England who is captured by the Danes and taught the ways of the Viking raiders. Caught between the pagan Danes and Christian Saxons, Uhtred battles with his loyalties as King Alfred of Wessex seeks to combine the fragmented kingdoms of Britain to form a single, English nation. While the Arthur books lead the reader from the post-Roman era in Britain through the Saxon invasion, the Saxon stories likewise highlight the Saxon’s attempts to throw off the chains of their would-be overlords, the Danes. At present, this series consists of five titles, including The Last Kingdom, The Pale Horseman, The Lords of the North, Sword Song and The Burning Land.

The Grail Quest

This tail of the Hundred Years War tells the story of archer Thomas Hookton, whose role in the English army as an archer sees him tangling regularly with the French. The series consists of Harlequin (Title "The Archer’s Tale" in the U.S.), Vagabond and Heretic and adds a twist that relates to the search for the Holy Grail.

Lost

Lay with me beneath the canopy of the oak
And listen to the burbling stream,
Lose yourself in my tranquility
And let me take you to the land of dreams.

Wallow in the rainbow of the aurora borealis,
And I will paint you a picture of solace
Within the serenity of cool evening breeze,
I shall deliver to you a perfect peace.

Drink the elixir of my pagan brew
And inhale the breath of the wild rose,
Dance to the tune the songbird sings
And I shall read to you my words of prose.

Harken to my stories of magical lands
Where elves and fairies live together,
Where the unicorn grazes in honeysuckle fields,
In the land of constant summer.

Sail beneath the wings of angels,
As they sing in their heavenly whispers,
Blowing kisses on the notes of a melody
That touch your brow with the softest fingers.

I will build you a castle in the sky,
To reside within the pillars of Heaven's door,
Within the silent thoughts of rolling clouds,
Where you may dwell forevermore.

I'll put the crown of Saturn upon your head,
And adorn your neck with a chain of stars,
And place a moonbeam in your soul
To shine it's light within your heart.

Hush sweet angel and softly dream,
And I shall take you to Nirvana's valley,
The pinnacle of love's triumphant opus
Where I can lose myself in your beauty.

Heart will make that empty sounds

"Thanks for staying through the storm." I smiled at Conor as we stood on the deck, enjoying the first rays of sun since it started raining. "No problem. I’ll see you around." He smiled and started walking off.

"Wait, will you do me a favor? If you see Jeremy can you tell him to come over sometime?" I asked awkwardly. He turned back toward me, "Sure." He nodded and walked off, leaving me staring at his back, and eventually the spot where he used to be standing. Something about this tells me that me asking him that ended our relationship; or whatever it was. It’s sad, but I guess I pretty much have more in common with his mom.

Snapping out of it, I ran into the house when I heard my phone ringing, but of course by the time I got to my phone, it had stopped ringing, but blinked with a voice mail. Pressing play I listened, "Hello, Jennifer this is Mike, from the recording studio. I’m calling to convince you to come back to LA, you could make this record awesome, but this band is lost without you. Please consider it, call me back and we can discuss everything." Maybe I should go back to LA…

Before I could continue thinking about it, Jay walked in. I must’ve woken him up. "What’s that face for?" He asked ruffling my hair.

"That was Mike, he wants me to make the record with the band." I explained, and started the coffee maker. "Do it. Dad, Ryan, and everybody could take care of El for a few months, then you’d get to do something fun, and make money. Do it."

"Jay, it’s not that simple." I stalled, "I have school, and I have a job. I can’t just drop that." Jay thought for a moment before responding, "You can drop it. You’re almost done with the classes you're taking, and you can quit your job to pursue something different. You know you want a music career, you could learn how to work the boards or whatever you want to do and you’d be awesome at it. Come on! How long would one album take?"

"I don’t know Jay, I don’t think I could be away from Elli for that long -"
"Yes, you could, or we could both go and take her with us. It’s an awesome opportunity. You could do it. We could do it."

Jeremy’s P.O.V

Conor telling me that Jennifer wanted to see me, made the rest of my day hell. Watching the clock, waiting for 3:20 to roll around. And finally it did. I knocked on her front door and waited until she pulled the door open. "Hey," she whispered nervously, "Um, Let’s go for a walk." She smiled slightly and stepped outside pulling the door shut behind her. "So I guess you made your decision?" I asked, trying to skip the stupid small talk, that neither of us wanted to talk about. Her face fell to a frown and my heart sank. She’s going to say no…

"Not really." She whispered and stopped to face me, "I’m going to go back to LA. Just for a few months and then I’ll be back... but I think we should see other people. Jeremy, you know how I feel about you, but I think we need space. This whole on and off thing is driving me crazy. I need to figure out my life. I need to figure out who I really want to be with. I don’t want us to be together if neither of us are 100% sure it’s what we really want. I’ll be in LA for 4 months, then I don’t know what’s going to happen from there. I might go on tour, or I might start working with Mike… You know the guy from the record company? I’ve already figured it out with my dad and Ellie is going to stay up here with Ryan, and I’ll be up here every other weekend to be with her. Let’s see what happens over the next four months. You might find some amazing girl with less than half the issues I have and you might fall in love with her. Let’s just wait and see what happens." She finished and leaned toward me before connecting her lips with mine. Locking her arms around my neck, I pulled her closer and we kissed with an intensity that felt like we both were scared of the next four months and to be honest I am. I’m terrified of what is going to happen because I know she could have any guy she wanted… what if she doesn’t want me?

Jay’s P.O.V ~1 week later~

"Relax. Everything is going to be fine. This is for the best." I whispered to Jennfier as the plane started to descend back to solid ground. We’re about to land in LA, and I’m about to see the love of my life; Ashley. Sure I’ve seen her a few times since we moved, but now I’ll be with her for the next four months, and after that… who knows? I’ll probably stay here, and hopefully Jennifer will figure out what she wants. Hopefully she’ll meet a guy that won’t hurt her.

"Welcome to Las Angeles; the current time is 10:22 pm. Please stay in your seats with your seatbelts fastened until we have stopped at the gate and the captain has turned off the seatbelt light. You are now welcome to use cell phones and other electronic devices. Once the seatbelt sign has been turned off, please use caution opening the overhead bins for contents may have shifted during the flight. Thank you for flying with us, we hope to see you soon." The flight attend announced and Jennifer pulled out her phone and impatiently pressed the power button waiting for it to turn on. "Calm down! It’s only been an hour." I mumbled and she stopped abusing the button finally. "I’m sorry, it’s just so weird…" She whispered and put her phone back in her pocket before closing her eyes and taking deep breaths.

"I’ll grab the bags, meet me at the end of the ramp." I instructed Jennifer and pulled our bags out of the overhead bin. She’s freaking out for no reason, everything is going to be fine.

Stepping into the airport, after walking up the ramp that goes to the plane, Jennifer was sitting on one of the chairs on the phone. "Hey dad, just wanted to let you know we landed. Love you." She spoke into the phone and hung up as I walked closer to her. She took her bag from me and we started navigating to baggage claim. "Welcome home." I smiled and pushed her toward the escalator. What I didn’t expect, was a guy to walk right in front of her and for her to run into him, making him spill the coffee in his hand. "Jay!" Jennifer shrieked as the coffee landed all over both of them. "I’m so so sorry." She mumbled to the guy, "My brother is a complete idiot. Let me at least buy you a new coffee?" She offered politely.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t think you’d walk in front of her if I pushed her. It’s my fault not hers. Really let us buy you a new coffee." I agreed and the guy shook his head. "It’s fine. Not a big deal, I was going to have to throw it away anyways once I got to baggage claim. It’s not necessary." He finished, "I’m Anthony by the way." He finished and took Jennifer’s hand.

"I’m Jennifer, this is my brother Jay." Jennifer introduced and her cheeks turned red. "Again, I’m really sorry. It was nice meeting you." She finished and turned back toward the escalator so I followed her. What the hell was that?

Jennifer’s P.O.V

We finally got to baggage claim, and Jay saw Ashley. She ran into his arms and he picked her up and spun her around before they stopped to make out. It was like a scene from a movie, and sickening. No one really falls in love like that. It’s all a stupid lie.

With coffee still all over my light jacket, I pulled it off and sat down on the luggage carousel. I know there are signs everywhere saying don’t let your children play on it, but I’m sitting on it, I think I’ll be ok. "Third wheel, eh?" Someone interrupted my thoughts and sat next to me. Anthony? I guess he’s a stalker now… but he’s a really hot stalker.

"Yeah," I stuttered and looked away from them to glance at Anthony. Damn he is pretty hot. "Where’s your boyfriend?" He asked in his amazingly sexy Canadian accent, looking back at me. I’m Canadian, what can I say I’m a sucker for the accent. "I don’t have one." I sighed. Why did he have to ask that?

"What? You don’t have a boyfriend? You’re gorgeous." He flirted without looking away from my eyes. His green eyes are mesmerizing. "I just got out of a relationship, sort of…" I mumbled, "It’s complicated I guess." I whispered. "I know we just met, but what would you say to telling me about? Over breakfast tomorrow? I don’t really know anyone in town, but I’d like to get to know you." He asked so bluntly that I literally moved away a few inches. "I’m not a creepy stalker or anything, but I just switched to UCLA and I don’t know anyone who lives here; except you." He added with a cute smile that I couldn’t resist. "Ok, why not." I replied. He smiled victoriously and glanced over toward Ashley and Jay who were still making out.

Before he could say anything else, a loud buzzer went off, causing me to jump off of the carousel and barely stop from screaming. "A little jumpy eh?" Anthony laughed at me and took my hand, "I’ll protect you from the luggage." He mocked. "jerk." I mumbled sarcastically and couldn’t help but laugh as he kicked the first bag that slid onto the carousel.

So c'mon, I'm never let this go

First, I’m going to find out what she’s like. I’m gonna spend time with her, or around her since I actually don’t know her. What food does she like, white or red wine, does she like fashion, music – what kind of music? Is she into sports and if so, which sport. If not, why? When she walks like that, with her face slightly smiling, eyes browsing the world – what is she thinking about? What’s the thing with that little tin box she carries around in her purse? Why doesn’t she get of on the right station on her way to work? Does she like to walk or is it only about exercise? She speaks with a quiet voice – why? Why, why, why. I want all the answers.
Once I know this I’m going to change. I’m going to cut my hair. Dress differently. I’ll stop drinking and only eat carrots. My car has to go. Can I buy a bike instead? Switch career. Mountain biking has never been my thing, but I bought one today. Birds and an aquarium. I’ll talk differently and learn french too. I’ll start going to museums. Buy art. I’ll start a foundation that save whales. I’ll do everything that needs to be done – for her.
She won’t see me at first since I’m afraid of scaring her away. I’m in it for the long run. But sooner or later she’ll wonder who that guy is who always eats the ecological pasta in her favorite restaurant. Once she’s spotted me I’m going to say hi. Speak to her. We’ll talk about food, fashion, music, sport, cars and especially tin boxes.
She’s falling in love. I can feel it. That man on her favorite restaurant is her perfect match. She’ll make sure to be there on the same time every week. And I am there every week too. We talk more.
Would you like to go to the movies one night?
Yes. She says.
We go. We walk together. She’s smiling like always. I’m smiling too. We talk. We see a movie we both like.
I love you she says.
I love you.
Years go by. I find myself forgetting what she looks like. She doesn’t walk and smile anymore. I can’t remember what she likes to eat. Her voice is everything but quiet. My hair has grown out again.
We divorce.
Later I find out that she is in a new relation with a new man. He does everything that I don’t do for her. And I also learn that she’s not like before.
She changed.
I didn’t
We drifted apart just like brands drift apart from their target group, their behavior, what they enjoy, what kind of references in life they have. How and where they consume communication.
Brands, like people, seem to think change is hard. Its not. Just do something today that you haven’t done before. If you fail, try tomorrow again.
Don’t drift apart. Change.

Lonely days

Once upon a time, in an island there lived all the feelings and emotions : Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to them that the island would sink! So all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.

Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.

When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a boat. Love said,
"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "Sorry Love, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat and so there is no place here for you."

Love next asked Vanity who was also sailing by. Vanity was also ready with the same answer.
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, take me along with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!", sadness said in a sullen voice.

Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so preoccupied with her happiness that she did not even hear when Love called her.

Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. An overjoyed Love jumped up into the boat and in the process forgot to ask where they were going. When they arrived at a dry land, the elder went her own way.

Realizing how much was owed to the elder, Love asked Knowledge another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" thought Love. Then, as if reading the face of Love, Knowledge smiled and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."
